Linux users are probably already familiar with this tool, Windows users probably less so.

ffmpeg is a cross-platform command line tool that can convert just about any format of audio/video/image to just about any other format. It can extract and insert audio from your video, break your video up in to a series of images and even compile images in to a video. Whatever you can think of to do with your multimedia files, ffmpeg can more than likely handle it.
