Thoughts on show 029.

The past few shows were pretty ordinary, so I didn’t bother to write up a “thoughts” post for them. Nothing happened to write about, you know?

Well, in show 29, a couple of things happened that are worth writing about. So from now on, expect to see a “thoughts” post only of something interesting happened.

Anyway, in show 29 we used a different method to record the audio. In the past, both Mike and myself were recording our own audio, then those two tracks would be combined in the final production process, along with everything else. For this episode, Mike finally found a way to record both sides of the conversation at the same time.

I have mixed feelings about this. First, it sure made the production process a lot easier, and that’s saying something. Second, it also makes the production process a little more frustrating because I can’t edit our audio seperately.

You can really notice that last point in show 29. Mike’s audio is lower than my own, so my voice is booming over his, and in some spots he’s even a little hard to hear. If our audio tracks were separate then I could have adjusted his and evened things out a little. Everything sounded great while we were recording, otherwise I would have asked him to raise his mic level a little, and I only noticed this while I was putting the show together.

Something else that kind of goes along with this is that, for example, Mike lets loose with a loud sneeze right when I’m making an important point and he doesn’t get his mic muted in time. I have a choice at this point. I could either chop out that sneeze along with whatever I was saying, or I could leave it in there and let the sneeze blow right on through to the final product. Neither of those are ideal outcomes.

In a perfect world we could still record both of us at the same time, but on separate tracks so I could still make these kind of edits. I’ll have to mess around with some ideas I have on this and see if I can make something work.

The other thing is that I forgot to record the intro. You know where I introduce the show and title right at the very beginning. Oops!

Doh!

It's too bad that it didn't work out too well. Did levelizer do anything to imporove the levels? I know Total Recorder let's you record into different channels, but I couldn't get it to work on my computer.

I'll have to check out that other utility.
