The Machine That Changed the World

Ran across a little gem today.

I found all five parts of The Machine That Changed World. It’s a five part PBS series, first aired back in 1992, all about the history of computing from Charles Babbage’s difference engine, the ENIAC, UNIVAC, the rise of IBM, Apple, and Microsoft, and on up to the early dial-up BBS’s and the internet.

It was fun to see a more expanded history of some of the things we talk about here in the computer history segment of the TGT podcast.

How to get rid of the Mobile Me Preferences Control Panel Applet

image

I posted about Apple sneaking Mobile Me onto Windows computers in with an iTunes update. Well here's how to get rid of the applet in Windows.

Note: Although the item we’re uninstalling is called “Apple Mobile Device Support”, it’s only used for iPhones and the iPod Touch. If you have a regular iPod, then all of the drivers are already in Windows. This will not hurt your standard iPod.

Wait a minute, I didn't install MobilMe!

Sorry folks, I’m a little slow on this one. I meant to post about it before, but haven’t had the chance.

How many of you like having software installed when you didn’t ask for it? I hope none of you raised your hands.

9 out of 10 people agree: Windows Vista beats Windows Vista in blind taste tests.

Boy, Microsoft pulled a fast one!

Looking for ways to combat Apple's anti-Vista ads, Bill Veghte, chief of Microsoft's Windows unit, came up with the Mojave campaign.

He showed Microsoft's newest operating system, code named "Mojave", to several "Vista haters" and filmed their reactions. Turns out, more than 90% of them loved the new operating system.

So what is Mojave? Why, it's.................................... Vista. Of course.
