Windows XP lives a little longer.

Looks like Microsoft decided to extend the lifetime of everyone’s favorite operating system, Windows XP, to May 30, 2009. The death of XP was originally slated for the end of January, but due to the popularity of Microsoft’s hard-to-kill operating system and the slow adoption rate of Vista, they decided to extend it a few months longer.

Is anyone really surprised by this? How many of you out there are still using XP? If you are, do you plan to go to Vista any time soon?

Can't open the Windows XP firewall settings?

My other XP machine finally decided to update itself to SP3 last night, and it bombed.

I don't know exactly what happened, because I run that machine headless and usually access it only with remote desktop. So, after the service pack installed, it restarted and I waited for it to come back up. But when it did, I couldn't get to it any more. I couldn't even ping it. I couldn't reach it over the network at all.

Make Windows your default OS on a dual-boot system.

Maybe you're like me and have a dual-boot system, booting both Ubuntu and Windows. Trouble is, when you do this, Windows gets pushed down to the bottom of the grub boot menu, and Ubuntu (or whatever other distro you use) is at the top and set as the default choice.

Don't you wish you can move Windows to the top to become the default choice? Well, it's easy to do, and I'm going to show how to get it done.

How to get rid of the Mobile Me Preferences Control Panel Applet

image

I posted about Apple sneaking Mobile Me onto Windows computers in with an iTunes update. Well here's how to get rid of the applet in Windows.

Note: Although the item we’re uninstalling is called “Apple Mobile Device Support”, it’s only used for iPhones and the iPod Touch. If you have a regular iPod, then all of the drivers are already in Windows. This will not hurt your standard iPod.

Wait a minute, I didn't install MobilMe!

Sorry folks, I’m a little slow on this one. I meant to post about it before, but haven’t had the chance.

How many of you like having software installed when you didn’t ask for it? I hope none of you raised your hands.

Some updates could not be installed.

Recently I performed a repair install of Windows XP SP 2. When the repair was finished, my computer notified me there were some updates available. In fact, there were ninety-something updates available.

After thinking about it for a few seconds, this made some sense to me. I had just used my XP SP 2 CD to repair my system, so basically that's all I had here. Just an SP 2 system with no updates installed.
